Seven Mile has reached hundreds of students across Detroit since it began in 2013, and the program continues to grow. Lessons are taught during the school year at Mission:City in Brightmoor and at Detroit Community Schools. Music is also taught in the summer at Mission:City during Brightmoor Arts Academy, a six-week summer program held free of charge for the community. In the BAA, students receive an introductory education to music and the arts through four hours of music lessons five days a week and two hours of art lessons during the final two weeks. After an introduction to music through Seven Mile, many students audition for DSO’s Civic Youth Ensembles, where they continue to practice, perform across Metro Detroit, and keep music in their lives. Lessons are taught by volunteer student teachers from University of Michigan who come from a variety of musical backgrounds. Teachers include music majors in the School of Music, Theatre and Dance, members of the Michigan Marching Band, and trained student musicians. At the end of each term, students perform in a final concert for parents, family, and community members, showcasing the skills they learned throughout the semester.
